Fresno Surgical Hospital Rated Top Performer Hospital For Surgical Care

The Joint Commission Names Fresno Surgical Hospital as Top Performer in Both Categories for which it was Eligible

Fresno, CA (Dec. 8, 2015) Fresno Surgical Hospital (FSH), an award-winning physician-owned hospital, today announced it was rated as a Top Performer Hospital in both categories for which it was eligible in The Joint Commission’s 2015 Annual Report, America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety.

FSH earned top marks in the Key Quality Measure categories of Surgical Care and Immunization. The Joint Commission analyzes accountability measures in several categories, among them Children’s Asthma Care and Inpatient Psychiatric Services.  Based on the type of services provided at FSH, Surgical Care and Immunization were the only categories in which the hospital was measured.

“We are honored to be named a Top Performer Hospital,” says Kristine Kassahn, Chief Executive Officer of Fresno Surgical Hospital.  “Our goal is to give Central Valley patients access to advanced, high-quality surgical care close to home. This recognition shows FSH is doing that. ”

The Joint Commission is a non-profit organization that surveys and accredits healthcare organizations. Its standards are considered the most rigorous in the industry. Earlier in 2015, FSH once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

The data included in the 2015 report was collected beginning January 1, 2014. Participating hospitals submit data quarterly for specific Key Quality Measure categories. Submitted data was analyzed and used by The Joint Commission to determine the Top Performer Hospitals. Nationwide, 1,043 hospitals were recognized.

According to the 2015 report, the Top Performer program is “designed to inspire better performance on accountability measures and to serve as an incentive for all hospitals to improve and provide the best care possible.” To earn a Top Performer distinction, hospitals must:

  • Achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures;
  • Achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases; and
  • Have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above and, within that measure set, have a performance rate of 95 percent or above on all applicable individual accountability measures.
