Fresno Surgical Hospital Named Hospital of the Year

Physician Hospitals of America Recognizes 5-Star Hospital

Washington, D.C. September 16, 2016 Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) today announced Fresno Surgical Hospital (FSH) is the recipient of the 2016 Hospital of the Year Award. PHA president, R. Blake Curd, MD, made the announcement during PHA’s annual Executive Summit in Napa, Calif.

FSH, an award-winning physician-owned hospital (POH) in Fresno, Calif., is the only hospital in California’s Central Valley to have earned a 5-Star Patient Satisfaction Rating for two consecutive years. The hospital recently earned an overall 5-Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as well.

The Hospital of the Year award recognizes a PHA-member hospital that best demonstrates the highest quality of nationally-recognized patient safety and care as well as service to its community.  There are approximately 250 POHs in the United States, many of which are also nationally ranked.

“We are honored to be the recipient of PHA’s 2016 Hospital of the Year award,” says Kristine Kassahn, chief executive officer of Fresno Surgical Hospital. “Our entire staff works hard every day to deliver quality care and the best patient experience. This award is a testament to their dedication.”

FSH is a multi-specialty surgical hospital that today serves more than 17,000 patients annually. Since 2005, it has been awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, and in 2015 was recognized by The Joint Commission as a Top Performer Hospital for both surgical care and immunization.  Its service to the community is noted by participation in food drives, Toys for Tots, coat drives, blood drives and the California Moves Miles Program, which encourages Californians to adopt healthy lifestyles.

A FSH patient who was nearly handicapped by stiffness and pain lauds the hospital’s personal care and optimal results. “With the help of my surgeon and the staff at Fresno Surgical Hospital, I have been given a new life!” says the patient.  “I am able to hike, golf, ski, garden, kayak, and live a wonderfully active and pain-free life.”

Another FSH patient’s vision was restored after an artificial cornea transplant. The vision loss prohibited him from working. However, just a few weeks after the surgery, his vision improved to 20/40 and he returned to work.

FSH was founded in 1984 by a small group of physicians and was one of the first POHs in the country. Their founding philosophy was that physician ownership helps assure patient care is optimal and of high quality.  FSH invests in advanced surgical technology, giving its patients access to care often found only in large metropolitan areas.

“Since our founding, Fresno Surgical Hospital’s mission has been based on the ideals of the physician-owned hospital model,” says Kassahn. “We are proud to be part of a group that strives to give communities across the U.S. access to the highest quality care at an affordable cost.”
