Fresno Surgical Hospital Earns Highest Rating on Government’s 2016 5-Star Patient Experience Survey

Fresno Surgical Hospital Only Local Hospital to Achieve “5 Star” Status

Fresno, CA (May 17, 2016) – Fresno Surgical Hospital (FSH), an award-winning physician-owned hospital, today announced it received a 5-Star Rating on the Federal Government’s Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS). FSH is the only Central Valley hospital to be awarded an overall 5-Star Rating. Nationwide, only 2.73 percent of hospitals earned this distinction, just 4 of those hospitals are in California.

HCAHPS is a national standardized survey that reports on patients’ perspectives of hospital care. The surveys are overseen by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Hospitals may not opt out of the survey.

According to the CMS, “Star Ratings make it easier for consumers to use the information on the Compare Websites and spotlight excellence in healthcare quality.” Hospitals are awarded between one and five stars, a higher number of stars earned indicates better quality care.

“Earning a 5-Star Rating for two consecutive years is truly an honor,” says Kristine Kassahn, Chief Executive Officer of Fresno Surgical Hospital. “Everyone at FSH – from the nurses to the surgeons to the administrative staff – strives to give our patients an optimal experience. This 5-Star Rating shows how dedicated our entire staff is to that mission.”

For each hospital, Hospital Compare lists twelve different HCAHPS Star Ratings; one for each of the 11 publicly-reported HCAHPS measures, as well as a Summary Star Rating that combines all the HCAHPS Star Ratings. On these surveys patients rate hospitals on criteria such as: how well nurses and physicians communicated with them; cleanliness of patient rooms; how quickly they received help when needed; and overall opinion of the hospital, among others. On each of the 11 measures, FSH earned a significantly higher rating than both the state and national averages.

“At Fresno Surgical Hospital, we understand each patient has unique needs,” says Kassahn. “We empower our staff to ensure patients have a comfortable and relaxing healing environment.”

Over the years FSH has earned numerous awards. The hospital was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “82 Physician-Owned Hospitals to Know”, one of “101 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs” and number 26 on the “Top 50 Hospitals with the Best Patient Rankings”. FSH also is consistently rated among the top in the state of California and the nation for Total Joint Replacement.
