Fresno Surgical Hospital Recognized For Providing Lower Cost, High-Quality Surgical Care

Government Releases Report on Hospital Costs; FSH Costs Less Than State & National Averages

Fresno Surgical Hospital (FSH), an award-winning physician-owned hospital, today announced its average spending per Medicare beneficiary is lower than both the state and national averages. These findings, for the reporting period of January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2014, were recently published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on its QualityNet website.

FSH is also one of only two hospitals in the state to earn a 5-Star Rating on the Federal Government’s Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS), which measures patient satisfaction.

“We are extremely pleased with the findings of the CMS report,” says Kristine Kassahn, Chief Executive Officer of Fresno Surgical Hospital. “Fresno Surgical Hospital’s mission is to give our patients high-quality, value-driven surgical services. This report shows that we are succeeding at that goal.”

According to the CMS report, FSH’s risk-adjusted spending per Medicare admission (out of 713 eligible admissions) was $17,445, compared to $19,838 for California, and $19,679 nationally.

CMS calculates these measures as the ratio of a risk-adjusted Medicare Spending Per Beneficiary (MSPB) amount to the median episode-weighted (episode = admission) spending amount across all hospitals. A MSPB of 1.0 is considered the national average. If a hospital’s MSPB is less than 1.0, its spending is less expensive than the national median per Medicare beneficiary. FSH’s MSPB measure is 0.87.

“We continually seek ways to make our processes and procedures even more efficient,” says Kassahn. “That way we can optimize surgical outcomes while still providing compassionate, affordable care.”

Over the years FSH has also earned numerous awards for quality of care.  The hospital was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “82 Physician-Owned Hospitals to Know”, one of “101 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs” and number 26 on the “Top 50 Hospitals with the Best Patient Rankings”. FSH also is consistently rated among the top in the state of California and the nation for Total Joint Replacement.
