FSH Awarded Highest Honor on CMS’ New Overall Hospital Quality Rating Program

Fresno Surgical Hospital Only Local Hospital to Achieve “5 Star” Status Based on 64 Quality Measures

Fresno, CA (Aug. 2, 2016) Fresno Surgical Hospital (FSH), an award-winning physician-owned hospital, today announced it received a 5 Star Rating on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating program. This is the first time CMS has combined the results from 64 measures into a single star rating.

FSH is one of only 102 hospitals nationwide to earn an Overall 5 Star Rating. There were 3,662 hospitals included in the Star Rating program, the average rating earned by a hospital was three. Additionally, 937 hospitals did not have enough data to be included in the ratings program.

“Over the years FSH has earned a reputation for giving the highest level of care and patient satisfaction,” says Kristine Kassahn, chief executive officer of Fresno Surgical Hospital. “This Overall 5 Star Rating reflects the dedication that our entire staff has to caring for our patients.”

The 64 measures used to calculate hospitals’ overall ratings fall into seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical. Earlier this year CMS released star ratings based only on patient experience. FSH was the only Central Valley hospital to earn a 5 Star Rating in that category as well.

According to a CMS blog post written by Kate Goodrich, MD, director of the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, the Overall Star Rating was designed, “to help millions of patients and their families learn about the quality of hospitals, compare facilities in their area side-by-side, and ask important questions about care quality when visiting a hospital or other healthcare provider.”

“Only two percent of U.S. hospitals earned an Overall 5 Star Rating,” says Kassahn. “It is truly an honor to be recognized among this group of top-tier hospitals.”

Additionally, FSH has earned many other awards for both quality of care and patient satisfaction. The hospital was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “82 Physician-Owned Hospitals to Know”, one of “101 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs” and number 26 on the “Top 50 Hospitals with the Best Patient Rankings”. FSH also is consistently rated among the top in the state of California and the nation for Total Joint Replacement.
