Total Joint Replacement

Knee and hip pain can prevent you from doing the things you love, but Total Joint Replacement can help alleviate the pain. Our surgeons offer the choice of traditional and robotic-assisted surgery services for both inpatient and outpatient procedures through the Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgical System for knee and hip replacements and soon the ROSA® Robotics and other robotic surgical tools. Our surgeons typically use arthroscopic techniques to provide minimally invasive procedures so you heal more quickly and can move forward with your life, pain-free. Fresno Surgical Hospital has earned top ratings in both the state of California and nationally for Joint Replacement.

Robotic-assisted Services

Mako SmartRobotics™ is an innovative solution for many suffering from painful arthritis of the knee or hip. Mako uses 3D CT-based planning software so your surgeon can know more about your anatomy to create a personalized joint replacement surgical plan. This 3D model is used to preplan and assist your surgeon in performing your partial knee replacement.

In the operating room, your surgeon follows your personalized surgical plan while preparing the bone for the implant. The surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm within the predefined area, and Mako’s AccuStop™ technology helps the surgeon stay within the planned boundaries that were defined when the personalized preoperative plan was created. By guiding your doctor during surgery, Mako’s AccuStop™ technology allows your surgeon to cut less by cutting precisely what’s planned to help protect your healthy bone.

It’s important to understand that the surgery is performed by an orthopaedic surgeon, who guides Mako’s robotic arm during the surgery to position the implant in the knee joint. Mako SmartRobotics™ does not perform surgery, make decisions on its own or move without the surgeon guiding it. Mako SmartRobotics™ also allows your surgeon to make adjustments to your plan during surgery as needed.

Outpatient Total Joint Program

In 2021, Fresno Surgical Hospital began our Outpatient Total Joint Program. With the careful consideration of our surgeons, patients undergoing total knee, hip, ankle or shoulder arthroplasty may be candidates for an outpatient procedure. Same-day discharge allows patients to recover in the comfort of their own home rather than staying in the hospital overnight. Patients who qualify for an outpatient procedure are typically discharged 4-6 hours from the surgery start time.

Our Total Joint Coordinator works with patients and their family members to educate on processes and procedures in the hospital, review expected activity limitations, assess support for home care, discharge needs, and address any questions they might have while preparing for surgery well before the day of the procedure. To help ensure patient safety and a proper recovery, Fresno Surgical Hospital’s Total Joint Coordinator stays in contact with the patient via phone calls conducted 24 hours, 14 days and 30 days post-surgery.
